Mail Me Art 2 is now CLOSED for submissions.
How to submit your mail art
Mail Me Art 2 will run until 31st March 2010 31st January 2010. For more information about the project, please click here. If you’re after some inspiration, you can see examples of work from the first Mail Me Art project here.
So what’s in it for you?
At the end of each month there will be a signed copy of the book, Mail Me Art: Going Postal with the World’s Best Illustrators and Designers, plus an art-related prize given away to the artist of our favourite submission for that month. We are also hoping that there will be a follow up book and if there are enough submissions we will run another exhibition. As before, artists will receive 70% from the sale of their mail art, less any gallery commission incurred. Money from the book and/or sponsorship will be used to cover the cost of organizing and hiring the gallery; artists will not be asked to contribute to the cost of the exhibition.
Before starting on your submission(s), please take time to read the important points below:
- As before, there is no limit on the size, shape or media that may be used.
- Please put your name and email address clearly on the outside of the artwork.
- Write ‘empty’ or ‘open me’ on the mail art so that we know whether we need to look inside.
- No offensive or obscene images or text may be used. If you’re not sure whether something is offensive, then it probably is!
- The exterior of the envelope, postcard, box or package is the artwork, please do not place it inside an additional envelope.
- One piece of mail art per artist may be sent each month. If more than one piece is sent each month, the first piece received by us will be the one considered for the monthly prize.
- By posting your work to the project, you are giving us your consent to use your mail art in any potential promotional or published material relating to Mail Me Art and/or the project.
- If you are sending work from outside the UK or Europe, please make sure that the customs declaration shows the value of the piece as $0, as we are unable to pay the high import taxes that are often charged on items entering the UK.
- Artists will not be required to contribute to the cost of any of the follow: the exhibition, the promotion of the event, or the publication and printing of a Mail Me Art book.
- Unsold artwork cannot be returned to artists.
The address to send your work to is:
Mail Me Art

Victoria Avenue

We look forward to receiving your work!

Hi,
Today I’ve mail you some art but now I realize I haven’t added my e-mail at the envelope… ups! sorry…
two pieces of mail art are en route
Hope you got the piece I send and it didn’t get too battered. Do you email people to let them know their work has arrived? Good luck with the project, hope it as big a success as the first time round.
Nope no emails sent! We’ve had nearly 60 pieces so far. I’ll be uploading them to Facebook, this site and Flickr next month so people can keep track.
I am so inspired and excited, I will spend some quality time during my holiday break to do this:)
Thanks!
Darren,

OH NO! I just realised when I mailed out the letter, I didn’t use any customs forms, I was able to just put some international stamps on and send it.
I wonder what will happen to it : /
Hi!, would you like some Candy The Magic Dinosaur stuff for your book?…
The project finishes on December 31st 2009, but you can submit a piece each month leading up to that… and our favorite piece from each month will win a copy of the Mail Me Art book and a really cool art related prize. So get doodling!
Finished a second one. Will send it tomorrow. I hope the first one arrived.
Hello, thanks for the opportunity. Could the address where I will be sending to be written on the back? or does it have to be on the front?
thank you in advance.
just sent another piece of mail art yesterday. hope the project goes well.

The address can be part of the art work or not part of the art work on the back or front, as long as it can be read by the postman and has the right postage on it.
Hi Darren!
When do you plan to start uploading new works? It would be great to see how the second exhibition will look like (especially for those artists who will not be able to see the show in the UK). Thank you in advance for your reply.
Hi Dasha, I’m really sorry it’s taking so long! Soon!
Hi Darren!

Dasha, there are some new pieces up here – http://mailmeart.com/going-postal/gallery/mail-me-art-two/
& Rahele, we are currently accepting submission. Prizes plus a copy of the first book are given away each month to the contributor of our favorite piece and you can submit as many pieces as you want to. We will stop accepting submissions in sometime in January or February 2010. Also all submission will be at the mail me art two exhibition being sold on behalf of the illustrators with a number of them being considered for the next book. Please read all the terms and conditions at the top of this page.
Dear Darren
Is it accepted sending artworks from different countries (like Bangladesh) to MailMeArt?
May I send artworks via DHL or like any other services?
Hi Touhin, we’re accepting mail art from any country and you may use any delivery or mail service you want to.
Hi,
I sent a submission in June, but I noticed that the gallery only contains stuff from May. Am I looking in the wrong place, or are you a bit too snowed under with responces to add all entries?
Cheers,
Sorrel
Just added June’s to the gallery, if it’s not there it may be in July’s batch… http://mailmeart.com/going-postal/gallery/mail-me-art-two/
I’ve been a big fan since the first one, though I never got the courage to submit one. Hopefully, I can do so this time.
Dear Darren
I sent you an artwork by postal mail in august.
but how can I informed that you received it ?… please let me know.
I want send you another artwork in this month.
thanking you
Touhin Hasan
Hi Touhin,
I’ll check the records and let you know asap, August’s mail art is yet to be uploaded to the galley. If you’re able to email me a photo or scan of the work to darren at mailmeart dot com. I’ll probably be able to give you a quicker answer.
Best Wishes,
Darren
Hi Touhin!
Is your actual name (Touhin Hasan) on the work? If you’re sending from Bangladesh, it may be the case that it’s not arrived yet.
Darren
I just bought your first book. I love it! I have been involved with mail art for many years off and on with other artists. I am excited to participate, thanks for the invite.
Tara Ross
Thanks for getting involved. I’m glad you enjoyed the book and look forward to receiving your artwork.

Count me in – I’ll be submitting!
Will Royal mail admit any printed envelope? – even a home made one?
Yes! As long as it’s not offensive, it has the right postage and they can read the address.

Hi Darren!
I’m in no way doing this solely for money (as I’m aware it is not often that artwork is sold), but you mentioned in your post that 70% of a sale will go to the artist. How would you go about paying the artist? Should we include a mailing address when we submit entries?
Thanks,
fr0gg

The money gets PayPaled to the email address on the work.
I sent you one! This is fun. Anyways, I hope it gets there safe!
Hi Patience, yes your work has arrived safely.
For anyone else who submitted around August, we will be posting all of August’s artwork up later today.

I only wish I’d known about this before we launched the global (and now traveling) exhibition A Book About Death at the Emily Harvey Foundation Gallery in New York. Take a look… nearly 500 artists participated including Yoko Ono, Geoffrey Hendricks, Peter Schuyff, Eric Andersen and many more including the UK’s Rob White. The project’s name is inspired from the late Ray Johnson.
See the works: http://abookaboutdeath.blogspot.com/
I will send some of my own work very soon.
Best, Matthew Rose/ Paris
Dear
